Search Engines
How can I make it safer?
Setting things up…
- Set the preferences on your search engine to activate the “SafeSearch” feature.
- For Google: When you access the Google search page, there is an option beside the search bar called "Preferences." If you select that, a number of options become available. Scroll to the "SafeSearch Filtering" option. This provides you with three content filtering options and you can choose the one most suitable for your situation.
- For Yahoo: First complete a search on Yahoo. At the top of the results page, beside the search bar, click on "Options." If you select this, a dropdown menu appears. Choose "Preferences." There is then an option "SafeSearch" which will allow you to filter content.
- Review the sites adolescents are visiting.
- Use anti-virus and filtering software.
Important discussions to have…
- Reinforce to adolescents the public nature of the Internet and let them know you will supervise online activities.
- Discuss the components of a healthy relationship and healthy sexuality. Ensure adolescents understand that they can talk to you about anything they come across on the Internet without fear of losing computer privileges.
