What are the risks?

Content:

  • Photos/videos emailed to others can be reproduced, altered, or posted online without the subject's consent or knowledge
  • Emailed photos can disclose the subject's appearance and location.

Conduct:

  • An adolescent may engage in private conversations and share private information, images or videos, unaware of the lasting consequences. Once material is sent online, control over what happens with the material is lost, and subsequent feelings of exposure felt by the adolescent can be devastating.
  • An adolescent may send nude images to peers without understanding that the images can be forwarded or permanently posted online.
  • An adolescent may forward emails containing nude or partially clothed images/videos of peers and/or images/videos of peers engaged in sexual acts.

Contact:

  • Sexual offenders may coerce children/adolescents to post nude or partially-clothed videos/images of themselves.
  • Sexual offenders may use previously sent images or videos to threaten a child or adolescent into sending additional sexually explicit images.
