Search Engines

How can I make it safer?

Setting things up...

  • Use the filtering options available on many search engine sites to help moderate the search results that appear. Sites like Google, Yahoo!, and Bing provide filtering or SafeSearch modes through their settings.
  • Take time to explore the sites children visit to make sure they are age-appropriate by reviewing their history files.
  • Set strict limits on the amount of time children spend online.
  • Restrict children's use of adult search engines.
  • Use a critical eye while visiting websites with children. Pay attention to what children are interested in, and address safety issues as they arise (i.e. chat components, posting messages, trading items with others, avatars interacting, etc.).

Important discussions to have with children...

  • Set the expectation that you will monitor children's online activities as the Internet is a public place.
  • Show children how to use safe search engines (e.g. Yahooligans).
  • Teach children how to use "favourites" and "bookmarks."
  • If children come across something or someone that makes them feel uncomfortable, explain that to them that they can tell you without fear of losing computer privileges. Let children know that if they feel a situation is potentially unsafe, it probably is and to come and talk to you about it.
