Social Networking Websites
How can I make it safer?
Setting things up…
- Review the "Terms of Use" for the social networking sites children are interested in to ensure they meet the age requirements to use the service.
- Assist with the creation of online profiles. What username or character names has the child given her/himself? Does it provide identifying characteristics about her/him or her/his hobbies (i.e. shygirl, bookworm, etc.)?
- Know children's login information and email addresses.
Important discussions to have…
- Set the expectation that you will monitor children's online activities, as the Internet is a public place. Watch children's online communications closely, and discuss the qualities of healthy and unhealthy friendships.
- Teach children about adding friends only if they have already met them in person (i.e. exchanged email addresses with friends either over the phone or in person).
- If children come across something or someone that makes them feel uncomfortable, explain that they can tell you without fear of losing computer privileges.
