How can I make it safer?
Setting things up…
- Consider adding a program like Spam Arrest or TMDA to your child's email. These programs only allow people on the "allow list" to send an email to your child and force unknown email addresses to confirm themselves before sending email to your child’s Inbox.
- Know your child's login information and email addresses. What name did your child use for their email address? Does it provide identifying characteristics about her/him or her/his hobbies (e.g. shygirl, bookworm, etc.)?
- Monitor any exchanging of pictures via email.
Important discussions to have…
- Set the expectation that you will monitor your child's online activities, as the Internet is a public place.
- Explain that pictures should not be sent or posted online without parental permission. Once sent, control over what happens to the picture is lost.
