Webcams

How do I make it safer?

Setting things up…

  • Monitor webcam use and any posting or exchanging of pictures online.
  • Check your child's files in "My Pictures" to see what images are being sent, received, and saved by your child.
  • Set a time every night when all technology should be shut off. Many laptops have built in webcams so if your child has a laptop in her/his room, make sure s/he either closes the laptop at this time or the laptop is removed from her/his room.

Important discussions to have…

  • Explain to your child that people can save pictures of someone on webcam. Once a picture is sent or saved by someone else, control over what happens to the picture is lost. It is important to be careful when sending pictures to others.
  • Explain to your child that if someone tries to get her/him to send a picture or to go on the webcam and do things that are inappropriate or seem “weird” s/he should stop talking to the person and tell a safe adult about it.
