What are the risks?

Content:

  • Adolescents may receive harassing/unwanted email messages and/or spam messages which could contain inappropriate material.
  • Emailed photos can disclose the subject's appearance and location.
  • Email accounts are vulnerable to spam, viruses and other malicious content.
  • Email messages which may contain private, personal information could be sent to the wrong address.

Conduct:

  • An adolescent may engage in private conversations and share private information, unaware of the lasting consequences. Once the information or material is sent online, control over what happens with the information or material is lost, and subsequent exposure felt by an adolescent can be devastating.
  • An adolescent may send nude or partially-clothed images and/or images of them engaged in sexual acts to peers without understanding that the images can be forwarded or permanently posted online. Photos/videos emailed to others can be reproduced, altered, or posted online without the subject's consent or knowledge.
  • An adolescent may forward emails containing nude or partially clothed images/videos of peers and/or images/videos of peers engaged in sexual acts.

Contact:

  • Adolescents run the risk of falling victim to fraudulent advertising campaigns via 'spam' email.
