Online Video Sharing Sites
How can I make it safer?
Setting things up…
- Monitor your adolescent’s webcam use and any posting or exchanging of pictures online.
Important discussions to have…
- Explain to your adolescent that pictures should not be sent or posted online without parental permission. Once sent, control over what happens to the pictures is lost.
- Reinforce the idea that not everyone is who they say they are online. People can pretend to be older or younger than they actually are.
- Explain to your adolescent that s/he should trust her/his instincts and block or ignore someone if they ask questions online that seem "weird" (e.g. questions about puberty, sex, etc.).
- Teach your adolescent that it is illegal for people to manufacture, possess or distribute naked or sexually explicit pictures of children under 18 years of age.
- Ensure your adolescent understands that s/he can talk to you about anything on the Internet without fear of losing Internet privileges.
- Suggest your adolescent review Respect Yourself, a website designed to teach teens about the risks they face when sending pictures or videos by email, Instant Messaging (IM) programs or by posting them online. This site guides teens through the risks and provides them with strategies to help keep them safe.
But if you have, for example an account for Youtube can't you delete it before your parents see it?
