Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and BitTorrent

What is it?

These programs allow users to establish a connection and have direct access to shared files on each other's computers.

  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) programs (e.g. KaZaa, Limewire) allow the exchange of images, videos, music files, etc. without using a centralized server.
  • BitTorrent is a specific type of peer-to-peer software. It enables fast downloading of large files by gathering pieces of the file you want and downloading these pieces simultaneously from multiple individuals who already have them. Files available for download are typically found through web browser based torrent search engines such as http://thepiratebay.org/ or http://isohunt.com/.
