I thought my daughter was safe too...She had a cell phone, the Ipod Touch, xbox live and Facebook. I watched everything, but it didn't stop her from getting and giving out personal information. We ended up filing a complain about a guy that started messaging her on the internet and started to lure her with the intent of sexual purposes. Don't be stupid people, I never thought in a million years that this would happen to my family, it had ripped all trust of letting her have Facebook, and the rest. It has totally changed my outlook on all of these technologies. You might think your child is safe, but unless they don't have the means to use all of these things, they are not 100% safe. I had a very open relationship with my daughter before all of this, I trusted that she would always be honest with me about what was going on. The wool was pulled over my eyes. It will be a long time before I will trust to let her use these things again.

Our household does not own a game console. However very good info if/when we do purchase one.

Wow, there are some useless comments here….. Regardless of your thoughts to whether a child should use a computer; almost all kids will use a computer and the internet at some point in their life.

Games do pose a potential threat to our children. Parents should know the risks, as this will allow them to make informed decisions concerning their child’s activities.

The purpose of the site is to assist parents and others with limiting their kids’ exposure to potential threats in cyberland. Most parents want to keep their kids safe, this site is a resource to provide tools and knowledge to facilitate this.

To give you a heads up, chat through online video games is often the most abusive, offensive and ignorant stuff that your daughter may be exposed to. I am a teacher but I also play some video games online and you would be shocked at what is being said. Your daughter being smart has nothing to do with the fact that their are people out their using the internet as a way to target children. Have faith in your daughter but be aware of the risks that are out there. A false sense of security is the worst thing anyone could have when talking about internet safety.

That's YOUR daughter. We're talking about children with low self esteem that can be easily targetted over the internet.

If that's the case, you haven't done enough to ensure that your child will succeed in life.

Hello, my kid is 11 and she does not watch anything bad. She is fine and i don't know why i should take privelleges away from her. She is smart and would never do anything bad. Computer is fine, games are fine. As long as its monitored.

Basically, that is the key to ensuring our children are safe is MONITORING!!!
But not every parent has that ability or knowledge to monitor this ever changing world of electronics...EDUCATION is also the key!
