Cell Phones and Texting

How do adolescents use it?

Text messaging is the most popular cell phone activity among adolescents. Text messages can include multimedia such as images, audio or video. Adolescents also use their cell phones to:

  • Call friends and family.
  • Use Instant Messaging (IM) programs. IM programs work in a similar way as text messaging, but typically involve more multimedia components such as photo, video or audio capabilities.
  • Access the Internet (accessing emails, visiting chat rooms, etc.). Adolescents may use the web browser on their cell phone to access and download ringtones, games, wallpaper, etc.
  • Take pictures or videos of themselves or their friends using the camera on their cell phone and the picture/video option.
  • Play games.
