Search Engines
How can I make it safer?
Setting things up…
- A teacher, parent or safe adult should always supervise the Internet activities of 5- to 7-year-olds.
- Before visiting a website with students, take the time to explore the site yourself to make sure it is age-appropriate.
- Use a critical eye while visiting websites with students. Pay attention to what they are interested in, and address safety issues as they arise.
- Teach students how to use age-appropriate search engines, as well as "favourites" and "bookmarks."
- For schools: Set the preferences on your Google search engine to activate the “SafeSearch” feature. When you access the Google search page, there is an option beside the search bar called "Preferences." If you select that, a number of options become available. Scroll to the "SafeSearch Filtering" option - this provides you with three content filtering options, and you can choose the one most suitable for your situation.
- For schools: If you are using Yahoo, you need to first complete a search on Yahoo. At the top of the results page, beside the search bar, there is a button called "Options." If you select this, a dropdown menu will appear. Choose "Preferences." There is then a "Safe Search" option which will allow you to filter content.
- For schools: Use filtering software.
Important discussions to have…
- Let your students know that if they feel a situation is potentially unsafe, it probably is and to come and talk to you about it.
