Search Engines

How can I make it safer?

Setting things up...

  • Use a critical eye while visiting websites with students. Pay attention to what students are interested in, and address safety issues as they arise (i.e. chat components, posting messages, trading items with others, avatars interacting, etc.).
  • Schools: Use the filtering options available on many search engine sites to help moderate the search results that appear. Sites like Google, Yahoo!, and Bing provide filtering or SafeSearch modes through their settings.

Important discussions to have with your child...

  • Set the expectation that student's online activities will be monitored while at school, as the Internet is a public place.
  • Show students how to use safe search engines (e.g. Yahooligans).
  • Teach students how to use "favourites" and "bookmarks."
  • If students come across something or someone that makes them feel uncomfortable, explain to them that they can tell you without fear of losing computer privileges. Let students know that if they feel a situation is potentially unsafe, it probably is and to come and talk to you about it.
